TV4A welcomes Deidre Downs Gunn, MD, Miss America 2005, to Athens, Alabama, as the keynote speaker at this year's Hope for the Holidays benefit dinner December 12, at the Limestone County Event Center.

Dr. Gunn is a native of Birmingham and a 2010 graduate of the UAB School of Medicine. She attended the University of Virginia on a full volleyball scholarship out of high school, but gave it up to focus on academics and transferred to Samford University. A graduate of Samford University, she was named a Rhodes Scholar Finalist in 2002.

She deferred admission to medical school when she won the title of Miss Alabama and then Miss America 2005. As part of her community service platform, she co-founded the Curing Childhood Cancer specialty license plate in Alabama, which raises funds for research at Children’s Hospital. During her year of service as Miss America, she was the spokesperson for CureSearch/National Childhood Cancer Foundation, raising awareness and research funding for pediatric cancer. After graduating from medical school in 2010, Dr. Gunn completed her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at UAB and is currently a senior fellow in reproductive endocrinology and infertility. After completing her fellowship in 2017, she will join the faculty at UAB as a reproductive endocrinologist.

Joining Dr. Gunn as part of the benefit event is Harpist Steven Todd Miller, of Madison, Alabama. Mr. Miller has been playing the Harp for thirty years, and will provide the dining entertainment.
Suzanne's Bakery will cater the special holiday meal, and Pimento's will be decorating the event hall. Each of Athens, Alabama. Volunteers serving at the event are provided by RSVP, a local non-profit organization of retirees serving the community.

Tickets are available online using this link, or print a mail-in orderform, or purchase in person at Riff Raff Furniture on Market Street in Athens.

"One of the best things Athens does," said one media representative about Superhero Day.
Sounds like a huge success, and with over 2,000 people in attendance for its third year, it looked like a success. Thank you to all that helped make it happen, and to all that came out.

We've got some smaller events coming up to finish the year off before making our final donation to the Children's Oncology Group. Our first partner show of "Eli's Block Party" car shows is coming up October 15 in Florence, Alabama, and we will have another Coffee 4 Cancer at Suzanne's Bakery during the Storytelling Festival in Athens, Alabama, on October 21. Our holiday benefit dinner is scheduled for December 8, so watch for details.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman.... wait... No! It's Summer flying by! September is zooming toward us, which means it's time to get ready for Childhood Cancer month, and Superhero Week September 6th - 10th. This awareness effort is exploding with interest, and we have added a couple of fun things this year for Superhero Day, September 10th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and grown our usual activities. Check out this year's “AMAZING” line-up… so far….

AMAZING "BE AMAZING" T-SHIRTS: The 2016 “Be Amazing… Fight Childhood Cancer” shirts will be in three stores beginning August 1.
Please, visit Gray & Holt in downtown Athens; Toodlebugs on Highway 72 in Athens; and Midway Cycle on Highway 72 in Madison. For group orders of 8+ use this form for a discount. Encourage businesses, schools, teams to “Be Amazing” on the Friday, September 9th, and wear their Superhero Day shirt to work or school, or a shirt of their favorite Superhero to help spread awareness for Childhood Cancer. We will have very few Superhero Day shirts at the event.

THE FLASH DASH: Run with Superheroes! Are you faster than the Flash? Are you lighter on your feet than Green Lantern? Can you fly past Superman?! This one mile fun run kicks off Superhero Day, September 10th at 10 a.m., registration opens at 9 a.m., but starts in most of our local schools September 6th. Hosted by Flo Doughty, Savvy Kids Fitness Instructor, The Flash Dash is both a one-mile fun run on Superhero Day, and the finishing mile for our school program that will be introduced in Limestone County schools, and we hope in Athens City Schools, and in local private schools and homeschool programs (ask your school about its plans to participate). Participating schools will give kids in grades K through 6th an opportunity to walk or run one-half of a mile during their Physical Education class starting on September 6th. They will receive a certificate of completion for two miles at school on September 9th, then be invited to the one-mile fun run at Superhero Day September 10th, which will complete an extended 5k. This “fun-raising” event at the schools is free to the schools, and free for kids to participate in. To receive a completion medal for the 5k at The Flash Dash on September 10th, and get a Superhero goody bag,
participants must register for $10. If you wish to participate in the Extended 5k that week, and are not part of our local school systems, SUPER!! Just let us know so that we can prepare our supplies, and then show up at the The Flash Dash for your last mile. To help us get an idea of how many might be participating in the daily half of a mile effort in order to finish an extended 5k on September 10th, please fill out this two question form. We are excited about Mrs. Doughty putting the “FUN” in our Fun Run, so don’t miss it. It’s open to all.

HEROES 4 VICTORY: Yes! Our supers are dusting off their costumes, getting ready for Superhero Week. Any school or business that raises money for Team Victory 4 All during that week, can have a Superhero come visit. We have a SUPER line-up, with a couple of new ones. The Supers will again arrive in parade-style along East Street immediately following the The FLASH DASH, and be available for pictures throughout the day.

REAL HEROES: We are excited about growing a section for the event to recognize real heroes in our communities, like emergency agency personnel, and military. The fantasy Supers are fun, but we
want to make sure kids know who to really look up to, and to give credit where it is due! So, don’t miss fire trucks, ambulances, patrol cars, military trucks, a helicopter, and the people who fill the seats.

DEFENDERS OF HOPE: Join an elite group of Super Citizens by hosting a kids activity booth. Choose to compete for a trophy and catered lunch for 15 by Suzanne’s Bakery, or just host a kids activity booth for fun and to engage the community. To compete, a $25 registration fee is required. Your church group, co-workers, family, ball team, or just friends wishing to spend the day together will be eligible for votes cast by kids, so make it fun! Any group wishing not to compete for the prize may have booth space for free as long as no money is being charged for the activity. To register as a Defender of Hope, and for more detailed guidelines and ideas, check out our Superhero Day page for the downloadable link.

SUPER SHEAR: We will have a stylist on site to cut and prepare hair for anyone wishing to donate to Wigs 4 Kids, a non-profit group that constructs real hair wigs for kids who have lost their natural hair to disease, and donates the wigs at no charge to the patient.
Please, let us know if you plan to participate so that we can be prepared by filling out this three- question form.

DJ DAVE’S BAT CAVE: DJ Dave is back in the Cave with Super Shout Outs, and Super Stuff to give away! If you would like to donate some Super Stuff for our give-aways, we could use some REALLY Super Stuff to help us raise money. Please, email teamvictory4all@gmail.com.

THE SUPER MARKET: We are “super” excited to add craft and product vendors to the event, so come ready to shop. We also have opened up this area to other non-profits wishing to sell or collect donations, as well as any service wishing to set up and donate to TV4A. If you would like to be a vendor, check out the Superhero Day page for details.

SUPER FOODS: The Smokin’ Box is back with it’s BBQ, and snow cones, plus Domino’s, and The Athens Optimist Club will join the Super Foods section with hamburgers and hot dogs. Our food vendor line-up is full as of this time.

Spring is in the air and cool cars are blooming! Seeing so many cruising, stretching their tires after a long winter's nap, gets us excited for Eli's Block Party! Help us spread the word to make this a great show. Register your car or bike to be eligible for one of the top three awards, and to be eligible for the drawings for gas card awards. Register as a vendor, or sign up for free booth space and host a kids activity while promoting your business or group. Follow the Eli's Block Party link in the tabs for the registration forms for cars and vendors.

Our Headlight Hero is Montana Parkerson, a local St. Jude patient, and live music will be provided by Matt Prater. The General Lee will be there, and watch for other special character sightings. A video game truck, and vendors for every member of the family will be there.
